Ecclesiastes 1:1-8 NIV
1 The words of the Teacher,[a] son of David, king in Jerusalem:
2 “Meaningless! Meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”
3 What do people gain from all their labors
at which they toil under the sun?
4 Generations come and generations go,
but the earth remains forever.
5 The sun rises and the sun sets,
and hurries back to where it rises.
6 The wind blows to the south
and turns to the north;
round and round it goes,
ever returning on its course.
7 All streams flow into the sea,
yet the sea is never full.
To the place the streams come from,
there they return again.
8 All things are wearisome,
more than one can say.
The eye never has enough of seeing,
nor the ear its fill of hearing.
• (verse 3) Under the sun – life without God
• Everything that you do that is not meant for God is meaningless.
• Whatever you do under the sun will not satisfy you. You will NEVER be satisfied because that satisfaction that you are longing for is God!
Many Christians are distant from God, only wanting to be saved, but nothing else. God wants you, not for what you can do for him. He wants intimacy/relationship.
Psalm 63 KJV
63 O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;
2 To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.
3 Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.
4 Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.
5 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:
6 When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.
7 Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.
8 My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.
9 But those that seek my soul, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
10 They shall fall by the sword: they shall be a portion for foxes.
11 But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by him shall glory: but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.
The book of Ecclesiastes is about the natural man laboring under the sun. Know your purpose on this earth. Do not live our life for what is under the sun. Solomon found out when he tried to find meaning in his accomplishments rather than in God. He was empty.
We were made to love because God is love and we were made in his image.
God is waiting right here for us to come to Him.
